The short answer
Reconcile equipment, documents, controls and outstanding work at the handover of a sailing yacht.
What you’ll work through
Prepare the inventory before settlement
Use the agreed sale inventory and exclusions as the starting point. Identify portable items, sails, tender equipment, spare parts and manuals clearly enough to recognise them. Ask whether anything shown in listing photographs belongs to someone else or is excluded. Resolve differences through appropriate written terms before the final handover rather than arguing over an ambiguous photograph.
Walk through normal operation
Arrange demonstrations of the controls and systems you will need immediately, with suitable people operating them. Record equipment identity, shut-off locations and known faults. Ask about recent modifications and any unusual procedures. Demonstration is familiarisation, not proof of long-term condition; keep the survey and specialist findings alongside the handover notes.
Collect documents and access
Reconcile keys, access arrangements, manuals, diagrams, maintenance records and agreed transaction paperwork. Clarify any berth or mooring arrangement directly with the relevant operator. Change appropriate owner-controlled access details through normal processes after transfer. Keep contact details for completed professional work and preserve the scope of outstanding items with responsible parties and dates.
Record exceptions clearly
If something is missing, untested or different from the agreed inventory, record it promptly and seek appropriate transaction advice. Do not silently mark an item complete because the day is busy. Take photographs with permission and ensure everyone is referring to the same list. Before departure, distinguish settlement completion from readiness for your intended sailing or delivery.
FROM OBSERVATION TO ACTION
What the answer means
| What you encounter | What it means | Your next action |
|---|---|---|
| Prepare the inventory before settlement | Establish the baseline before progressing this decision. | Use the agreed sale inventory and exclusions as the starting point. |
| Record exceptions clearly | Completion depends on evidence and a workable ownership plan. | If something is missing, untested or different from the agreed inventory, record it promptly and seek appropriate transaction advice. |
A BUYER’S DECISION
Work through an example
At a hypothetical handover, the photographed tender is present but its outboard is not included in the signed inventory. The buyer checks the agreed terms rather than assuming the photograph settles the issue. A separate unresolved battery concern stays on the work list, even though the cabin lights operate during the demonstration.
4 QUESTIONS FOR THIS TOPIC
The yacht handover inventory and demonstration: FAQs
Are all items in listing photographs included?
Not necessarily. The agreed inventory and exclusions need to identify what transfers.
Does a demonstration replace a specialist test?
No. It helps familiarisation and confirms what was shown operating at that time.
What if a promised repair is incomplete?
Record the exception and obtain appropriate advice on the agreed obligations and next steps.
Should I keep a copy after buying?
Yes. It becomes part of the ownership, maintenance and future sale record.
