The short answer
Coordinate remote evidence, local inspections and delivery before travelling or committing to an interstate yacht purchase.
What you’ll work through
Build a remote evidence pack
Request the hull identity, complete inventory, recent photographs and records before booking travel. Ask for photographs of the specific areas relevant to your brief, including machinery access and any disclosed repairs. A live video viewing can establish layout and help locate equipment, but it cannot replace a physical inspection. Record which statements come from the seller and which are supported by documents. Give yourself a clear stopping point if the yacht does not meet the intended use.
Appoint someone who can act locally
Choose an independent surveyor for the vessel’s construction and arrange machinery or rig specialists separately where needed. Confirm who provides keys, operates the yacht, books lifting and authorises access. Ask whether reports and quotes will arrive before the decision deadlines in your agreement. Do not make the travel itinerary the controlling deadline for the purchase. A cheap flight does not justify compressing a professional inspection or accepting missing documents.
Compare the purchase at its destination
Add delivery, accommodation, yard time, storage, insurance arrangements and destination readiness to the comparison. A yacht priced attractively in another state may be less attractive once essential work and movement are included. Decide whether work should happen near the seller, at the destination, or in two stages. Obtain actual quotes and define the handover point. Ask the relevant authorities and advisers about registration and other requirements for your circumstances.
Keep inspection and delivery separate
Buying the boat and being ready to move it are separate decisions. A delivery skipper may identify preparation needs beyond the purchase survey. Confirm the intended route, crew, weather flexibility, spares and operating knowledge with the responsible professionals. If delay is necessary, know where the yacht can remain and who looks after it. Leave a contingency for waiting; an immovable return-to-work date is a poor substitute for a viable delivery plan.

What the answer means
| What you encounter | What it means | Your next action |
|---|---|---|
| Build a remote evidence pack | Establish the baseline before progressing this decision. | Request the hull identity, complete inventory, recent photographs and records before booking travel. |
| Keep inspection and delivery separate | Completion depends on evidence and a workable ownership plan. | Buying the boat and being ready to move it are separate decisions. |
A BUYER’S DECISION
Work through an example
An illustrative buyer plans one weekend interstate to inspect, settle and sail home. The survey requires a cooling-system investigation and the yard cannot lift again until the following week. The buyer revises the timetable, prices storage and waits for the specialist result. The useful comparison becomes the complete cost of a prepared yacht at home, rather than the asking price plus a flight.
4 QUESTIONS FOR THIS TOPIC
Buying a yacht interstate in Australia: FAQs
Should I fly over before appointing a surveyor?
Establish suitability and obtain records first. Coordinate your visit with the available professional appointments, but allow enough time for reports and further investigation.
Can a video viewing replace my own visit?
It can help with a shortlist and access questions. It cannot establish concealed condition or demonstrate every operational concern.
Who should arrange the delivery?
Agree responsibility in writing and appoint suitably experienced people for the actual yacht and route. Confirm preparation, cover and the ability to delay.
Which state’s paperwork applies?
It depends on the vessel, current registration, intended location and transaction. Check the relevant authorities and obtain advice before settlement.
