PRACTICAL NEXT STEPS
Choose training around the sailing you will do
Beginner: build repeatable habits
Ask for practical time with boat handling, lookout, sail controls and crew communication. Explain whether you expect to crew for others or skipper your own yacht. A course description can include many topics while giving very different amounts of hands-on practice; ask how the teaching time is divided.
New owner: practise on the relevant yacht
Identify specific challenges such as leaving your berth, handling a larger headsail or reversing a catamaran. Ask whether suitable own-yacht instruction is available and what preparation the school requires. Include your regular crew so knowledge is shared instead of concentrating every task with one person.
Compare the actual booking
Confirm venue, teaching vessel, group size, prerequisites, assessment and recognition directly. Ask what the fee includes and how weather changes, cancellations and rescheduling work. Keep a record of the skills you want to practise afterwards; progression depends on applying the lesson as well as attending it.
