01

Choose the waterway before the yacht

A boat kept on Sydney Harbour and one kept around Pittwater can produce very different travel and weekend routines. Write out the journey from home to the vessel, including parking, tender access and loading. Compare the actual berth or mooring arrangements rather than assuming the advertised location will remain available after purchase.

02

Coordinate a viewing that produces evidence

Ask where the yacht will be available, who can operate it and whether records can be reviewed before travelling. Combine access for the surveyor and relevant specialists where practical, but allow enough time for each agreed scope. If moving between waterways is proposed, treat that as a separate operation requiring suitable people and arrangements.

03

Resolve lifting and contractor access

Give the yard the yacht’s dimensions, construction and proposed inspection needs. Confirm available dates, lifting charges, time ashore and permissions for additional investigation. For older production yachts, send model and repair history to the surveyor before the appointment. Do not book travel around an unconfirmed yard slot.

04

Check the home and the handover separately

Confirm marina or mooring arrangements with the responsible party and check current NSW requirements using official sources. An existing seller arrangement should not be assumed to transfer. Price the continuing cost, access and maintenance logistics against your own routine, then record where the yacht will remain if settlement or delivery is delayed.

Sydney Harbour or Pittwater: plan two different ownership routines

Keep the location of the advertised yacht separate from the place you intend to own it. A Pittwater viewing does not answer the questions about a future Sydney Harbour berth. Plan those enquiries in parallel before a purchase timetable makes them urgent.

Published operator information, not a ranking or endorsement. Capacity, access, prices and availability require direct confirmation for your yacht.

Pittwater: a yard enquiry with actual dimensions

Mac Marine Group publishes Newport boatyard services including hardstand hauling up to 70 feet and 45 tonnes. These published limits are an enquiry starting point, not acceptance of your yacht: provide beam, draft, loaded displacement and lifting information for confirmation.

Pittwater: marina and mooring options

The Quays publishes berth and mooring services at the southern end of Pittwater. Ask separately about availability, access, tender arrangements and a new agreement in your name. Do not treat the seller’s current place as an included asset.

NSW private moorings: check the actual pathway

NSW publishes specific private-mooring licence rules and transfer conditions. Read the current guidance for the proposed transaction; a sale description saying “mooring included” is not confirmation from the authority.

A practical enquiry sequence

  1. Before travelling

Obtain the berth location and access instructions. Separate a marina viewing from tender-access arrangements and agree who can bring the yacht alongside.

  2. Before booking the survey

Coordinate the named yard with the surveyor, owner and relevant specialists. Include the cost and responsibility for moving the yacht to the lift.

  3. Before settlement

Resolve the home berth or mooring independently of the sale. Keep a temporary storage option if repairs delay relocation.

Make the local enquiry concrete

  • Send the vessel’s exact dimensions, construction and intended use to the yard and surveyor.
  • Confirm access, inspection scope, written report timing and who operates the yacht.
  • Obtain a separate response about your proposed berth or mooring arrangement.
  • Keep preparation and delivery requirements separate from the sale timetable.

Use the survey briefing worksheet to keep those answers together.

4 QUESTIONS FOR THIS TOPIC

Sydney and Pittwater: buying questions

Should I shortlist Sydney Harbour and Pittwater together?

You can, but compare travel, access, storage and any movement costs separately. The boat’s advertised location is not the complete ownership plan.

Does a Sydney mooring come with the yacht?

Do not assume so. Confirm the specific arrangement and transfer requirements with the responsible authority or operator.

When should I reserve a haul-out?

After confirming the survey scope and yard suitability, coordinate a real booking rather than relying on a possible date.

Who confirms local boating requirements?

Use current NSW Government guidance and the relevant operator’s requirements for the vessel and intended use.
